The Embedded Traveler, Elizabeth G. Dowen
Hiking Fox Glacier, New Zealand
My name is Elizabeth Dowen and I graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in Journalism - PR/Advertising/Marketing. I have been a Hoosier all my life, growing up in Fishers, Indiana.
During my time in college, I uncovered my passion for writing and never looked back. While some may experience a beautiful landscape and take in its beauty, I'm creating a story to describe its warmth, its color and how it affects every sense in my body.
In the fall of 2011, I spent my semester studying in Australia and kept a blog to document all of my experiences. I learned that studying abroad wasn't just about the location, but much more than that. It was life-changing.
In six months, my outlook on life changed completely. I gained more confidence and independence than I ever thought possible, which was a powerful quality since I already thought I was strong. This experience taught me that wherever my career takes me, I will always be happy. And that I can find peace and a family anywhere I land.
The whole ‘other side of the world’ thing can really work on a person, but after a while it was liberating to know that regardless of anywhere that I ever live, I can do it. The first time I left living in the Hoosier state, I lived on the other side of the world. Pretty awesome!
I believe studying abroad in college and throughout your life is a must. We could use more global diversity and understanding. Ignorance is not bliss. The world deserves a well-informed public, there is so much potential.
Though writing about my travels, I hope that people take advice about hotspots and where to be in the world. But I also hope to give a broader outlook at the world around us and inspire the adventurous side of people.
I will forever be a Hoosier, but I'm always eager for the opportunity to immerse myself in new cultures and locations.
Currently residing in NYC! Give me tips and tricks for both cities, I'm intrigued!
